Help Yourselves Not To Pick Up Self-Help Counterfeits

“But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.” – Titus 2:1

19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil. – 1 Thessalonians 5: 19-22

Most of the time we read a lot of inspiring books, articles, hear inspiring messages yet as Christians, as believers in Christ and in the saving Gospel we are to go back to the word of God to put everything to test and see if these inspiring messages are genuine. We are called to defend the truth and the gospel of peace. We are called to study the genuine (the Word/the Bible) and not the counterfeits.

The problem with lots of self-help materials, is that it diminish the power of God by magnifying that our human effort could be enough to help ourselves. The fact is we are daily to ask for God’s help thus showing humility. Some of other materials if not magnifying humanistic effort, includes verses includes Jesus, but saying different thing and rendering a different interpretation that is explicitly far from what is the original intention. There is a call to test and scrutiny against these things.

Titus 2:7-8, Titus 1:9, 2 Timothy 4:2ā€“3, 1 Timothy 6:3ā€“4

If a book, a message are good and looks good, It doesn’t mean that they’re absolute good, our standard of goodness comes from God alone, therefore even if they are looking good, sound good we are to test them by cross-referencing to the Bible which is the Word of God, scrutinize and examine them if the Bible says the same thing, conduct the same thing, speak of the same thing, and proclaiming the same thing which is the truth. We should spend more time in prayer and in reading the Bible than reading self-help, superficial good looking and sound looking books and messages.

FBI agents who are in the business of tracking counterfeit money doesn’t study the fake money but rather study the genuine money bills, so when they see a fake one they will know easily that indeed it’s a fake. Same goes to agents of truth, us Christians, we study the truth, the genuine gospel which is in the Bible alone so when we come across counterfeit gospel we can easily tell and act promptly.
